Ranunculus (Persian Buttercups) are very popular for use in (wedding) flower arrangements, and no wonder, because one small Ranunculus tuber can produce many rosette-shaped flowers with multiple layers of stunning crepe paper-thin petals. For sheer flower power, Ranunculus are hard to beat when it comes to value for money. The claw-like tuberous roots are relatively inexpensive and produce an abundance of grass green, somewhat celery-like leaves with often up to several dozen flowers, remarkable for their many petals. Ranunculus can flower in your garden or containers for up to six weeks.
Ranunculus are superb cut flowers too. In fact, the more often you cut them, the more flowers they produce at intervals of one to two weeks. The beautiful Buttercup flowers have a long vase life. Try to cut the flower stems when they are in bud before they are fully open.
Planting Ranunculus bulbs
Ranunculus tubers can be planted in autumn or early spring at a depth of only 5-10cm with their “claws” facing downwards. When planted in fall, expect flowers from April and when planted in spring, Ranunculus will bloom from May to August. Ranunculus enjoy full sun and a well-drained soil, not too wet and not too dry. For the best display of flowers, try to plant your Ranunculus bulbs in larger groups of at least 20, and around 10-15cm apart.
