“Anemone” means “daughter of the wind” in Greek mythology, which might be why the name “Poppy windflower” is still used today to describe the Anemone. Anemones are part of the Ranunculaceae family.
According to the Metamorphoses of Ovid, the goddess Venus created the Anemone plant when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover Adonis. We don’t know if this is true as we weren’t there, but we are happy to go along with the story.
When buying Anemone bulbs, one is in fact not buying real bulbs, but tubers. At Bulbs & beyond we offer the Anemone Coronaria varieties of “Anemone De Caen” (single-flowered) and “Anemone St Brigid” (Double-flowered). Both Anemone varieties reach a height of around 20-25cm, have parsley-like divided leaves, and are offered as a colour mixture of red, violet, blue and white.
Anemone bulbs (tubers) are offered in both our spring bulb and summer bulb seasons. Like Ranunculus bulbs, they are great value for money as they provide long lasting flowers in the garden or in pots, and are also great cut flowers (on their own or in arrangements). Try to harvest Anemone cut flowers early in the morning while it is still cool and the blooms are still closed. It is best to place the Anemone stems in a vase with room-temperature water and out of the direct hot sun. Vase life is a very respectable 7-10 days.

Planting Anemone bulbs

Anemone tubers grow best in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Not too wet, and not too dry. When planting Anemone tubers space them at around 10cm distance and place them at a depth of around 5cm. Anemones like lot of sun but tolerate partial shade. Depending on when planted (autumn or early spring) flowers will appear from April to June.
